Norbord pitches in for football club
Norbord, the UK’s leading manufacturer of timber-based panel products has supplied its Caberdek P5 particleboard flooring and Caberfix Pro fixing kits to help provide a new clubhouse for Norton & Stockton Ancients, a member of FA Northern League Division 1.
Norbord and its distributor Travis Perkins were among a number of companies which responded to an appeal from club chairman Mike Mulligan for help to build the much-needed facilities. Along with other companies in the supply chain, Norbord and Travis Perkins supplied materials at a special price to help reduce overall building costs.
Mr Mulligan, who is also construction director with local developer Kebbell Homes, explains that while Norton & Stockton Ancients is an up-and-coming club, limited funds mean that it has struggled to provide adequate facilities for its members:
“We now have 20 teams, including junior and senior women’s teams, so our existing changing facilities were totally inadequate” he explains.
With funding for 50% of the cost of the project from the Football Foundation, Mr Mulligan turned to Kebbell Homes’ main contractor WA Browne and asked if the company’s supply chain could help towards sponsoring the remaining 50%. Browne then marshalled its subcontractors and materials suppliers who readily agreed to pitch in.
The result is a two-storey building which houses male and female changing facilities, club-room and bar area. Norbord’s contribution was to supply Caberdek tongue-and-groove flooring for both ground and first floor.
Caberdek was chosen specifically because installation of the floors had to be completed before the roof was fitted. Thanks to its waterproof protective film, Caberdek can be exposed to the elements with no risk of deterioration. When the roof is in place and all wet trades finished, the film is simply peeled off to reveal the pristine Caberdek boards ready to accept the floor finish.
In addition to the boards Norbord also supplied its new Caberfix Pro kits, each of which contains everything needed to install 50m² of Caberdek flooring. This includes Norbord’s new Caberfix Joint & Joist polyurethane adhesive which creates a waterproof seal along the tongue and groove joints as well as fixing the boards securely to the supporting joists.
Construction work began during summer 2010 and the club’s new building was completed early in 2011.
